The Challenge

Fresh potatoes contain a high percentage of moisture, making them highly perishable and difficult to store or transport over extended periods. For our customer, establishing a new potato dehydration facility required a reliable processing line capable of handling fresh potatoes with approximately 85% moisture while consistently achieving a final moisture content of 5–7%. Maintaining product quality throughout the dehydration process was critical to producing a stable, market-ready product.

The customer required a processing solution capable of converting fresh potatoes into uniformly dried potato chips while maintaining the desired moisture content, colour, and overall product quality. At the same time, the production line needed to support continuous operation to accommodate higher processing volumes and improve operational efficiency.

To meet these requirements, the customer sought a fully integrated dehydration system capable of automating every critical stage of the process, from raw material handling to final product discharge.

  • Raw Material Handling
    The process begins with controlled unloading of fresh potatoes, ensuring a continuous and uniform feed into the production line while minimizing manual handling.
  • Potato Grading
    The potatoes are graded before processing to remove unsuitable material and ensure uniform sizing. This helps improve downstream processing efficiency and promotes consistent product quality.
  • Washing
    The Rod Washer effectively removes soil, stones, and other surface impurities, providing clean raw material for further processing.
  • Peeling
    The cleaned potatoes are transferred to the Peeler, where the outer skin is removed efficiently while minimizing product loss and preparing the potatoes for slicing.
  • Slicing
    The Slicer produces uniformly sized potato slices, ensuring consistent thickness for even blanching and dehydration throughout the process.
  • Flood Washing
    Following slicing, the potato slices pass through the Flood Washer, where excess surface starch is removed to improve product appearance and enhance drying performance.
  • Hot Water Blanching
    The Hot Water Blancher provides controlled thermal treatment to prepare the potato slices for dehydration while helping preserve product quality, colour, and processing consistency.
  • Dewatering
    Before entering the dryer, the slices pass through the Dewatering Vibrator, which removes excess surface moisture and prepares the product for efficient drying.
  • Dryer Feeding
    The Dryer Feed Elevator uniformly transfers the slices into the drying system, ensuring even product distribution for consistent dehydration.
  • Dual-Stage Drying
    The core of the processing line is the TIGL Dual-Stage Dryer, where controlled airflow and temperature gradually remove moisture from the potato slices. The two-stage drying process promotes uniform dehydration while helping maintain product quality, colour, and a final moisture content of 5–7%.
  • Final Output
    The finished product consists of uniformly dried potato chips with consistent moisture content, colour, and appearance, ready for bulk packing and further downstream processing.
